Mousetraps and Scrolls at Taszo Cafe

We had an opening at Taszo Cafe on Wednesday, November 20, 2013.

Here are some shots from the opening.

The "Yemaya Scroll" which I partnered with Denise Laurin Donatelle on, is just behind me, with the purple border.

Mousetrap Scroll and the "Immigrants' Journey" Group Scroll are on display in the rear nook of the cafe.   The blue paper airplane was folded by the Origami master, Emmett Gebb (my 9 year old roommate!)

Detail of the bottom row of the Mousetrap Scroll.

The artist and aforementioned Origami master (in his Karate clothes) with his grandfather pose in front of the series of scrolls in the cafe.

Fuller view of cafe from the rear, towards the windows facing the street.  Note the Ninja pointing at the "Yemeya Scroll"

The above 2 photographs courtesy of Denise Laurin Donatelle and appeared originally on her blogpost http://deniselaurin.blogspot.com/2013/11/tokonomaa-at-taszo.html

Thanks to her especially for making this show happen!!

Nature Journal

7/13/13

Attached is a view through a back door at the Thoreau Conference. Only slightly distracting or inspiring.

Also by the bridge in the parking lot, saw a black-winged dragonfly with a blue iridescent body. Also a friendly lavendered bodied dragonfly with clear wings. Curious and open to be looked at, one landed on my shoulder.

Prepping For the CB12 Show

On Friday, June 7th, 2013, we opened the show "TokoNoMaa", which involved several artists of various disciplines in creating a series of Japanese-Style Scrolls.  The project was a collaboration between  NoMAA (Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance) and MoMA (yes, THAT Museum of Modern Art).

The installation was initially designed to be up for the duration of the Uptown Arts Stroll (the explosion of arts in Northern Manhattan which abounds in the month of June), but UPDATE, the show has been extended through the end of August!

Tribute to Color on a Grey Day

A good friend just passed.

He kept his illness hidden. He suffered alone, with only one caretaker.

He was vocal, but private during his life.

I had a distinct urge to hold colors up to the sky last night.

Bring color to the places you are. And leave it behind. For others.

Bottom Piece For Scroll

This is inspired by the idea of "holy" decoration. Islamic tiles, graffiti, Buddhist meditative practices, non-figurative and non-representative.

It will serve as the bottom piece at the collection, "TokiNoMAA", on a scroll specifically signifying the religious aspects of the neighborhood of Washington Heights.

Cornelia St Night

Some of My Own Poetry, Before & After Seeing Friends Read @ Cornelia St.

Promise
Promise of a future
What it is supposed to be.
The world without bombs and violence
The 60s redux without the love
Bullets and shrapnel
I promised to only love books
I promised to be the one friend to stay
To look beyond your bipolarity
And bad breath
Promises to myself cannot be undone
And fidelity is stronger than wisdom
Unfortunately

I'm glad the Dead are Dead
My father loved Patriots day
He'd get us up at 6am
To watch the bobbing of muskets
The smell and shape of gunpowder
Acting like theater
Acting like a reenactment
Of a violent gesture
Done for noble causes
History as propaganda
What is a parade, but a marathon
In slow motion
And with in funnier costumes
Test of endurance
And drums
Heart pounding
Hand clapping
Of families and friends
And friends of families
Waiting to give
The hug at the finish line.

When lilacs last in the courtyard bloomed
And April was the miracle of nature
Nothing yet washed away by rain and tides and wind
The sandy hurricane
Rearranging the shorelines of our lives

When I dreamed of your mother
Flying to my window
Asking me to take care of you
When I believed in Love
Altruistic and rich in openness
Finally, my honesty had found a home.

What I have Learned from you
That souls open themselves
A flash of light
Or the flash of a raincoat
Let me show you me
Something I find holy
But you will run screaming.
I dare you to be unimpressed.

I stayed.
It's not the mountains it's the coast.

I keep the conversations.
The emails,
Everything that you routinely delete on your end
I keep the memories
Because you throw them away.
Because of your amnesia.
It's not the man, but it's the ghost.
